“I would recommend working/traveling internationally to anyone. But if you’re going to do it, you must do it through GHS! You will never regret it!” Crystal, sonographer, April 2014
Once you have registration in Australia, the World is your oyster! There’s no doubt gaining registration is the biggest hurdle to working in Australia, however Global Health Source have years of experience and can help you navigate the process….more about that later!
There is an abundance of locum and permanent positions in all Australian states for sonographers – this could include a hospital based role in an idyllic coastal location or a private practice position in central Australia. The variety of scanning options and locations is huge. Your suitability for locum work or longer term roles will depend on your experience and your eligibility for the various visa options. Applicants eligible for working holiday visas are in an ideal position to undertake locum work and can combine assignments all over the country with travel and play for twelve months! Locum assignments usually include accommodation and travel costs. Others, either not eligible for these visas or after more stability can relocate on sponsorship visas, as temporary residents. Positions under this visa class are usually for two years duration and include relocation costs. This visa is valid for up to four years so there’s every opportunity to continue positions beyond two years.
The registration process is straightforward if you have qualified locally or across the Tasman in New Zealand, however if you have qualified elsewhere the process is very involved and the outcome not always positive. The team at Global Health Source has considerable experience recruiting sonographers and echocardiographers and know many of the idiosyncrasies of the registration process. With our advice we can give applicants an honest indication of your likelihood of success and potentially save you significant money and heartache! As a basic rule is reasonable to assume that if you have a formal ultrasound qualification, ideally an additional qualification in health sciences and two years post graduate experience you will be successful. It seems illogical, however the Australian Institute of Radiography is the approved assessment organisation for overseas qualified sonographers. They usually take up to four months to assess applications and the current cost is AUD$825. We regularly assist candidates in ensuring all the information required for applications is suitable.
Global Health Source has a specialist migration division and we’ve successfully assisted medical imaging professionals achieve permanent residency in Australia and make the island continent their new home!

“GHS are a superb company who live up to their promises. They did everything they said they would do and to the timescales agreed. Not only that, but their aftercare was also outstanding with personal phone calls to ensure everything was ok and that I was settling in with no problems.” Claire, sonographer, Oct 2012
